April is for Peace with the Planet

There are a number of great Blo-No events celebrating environmental sustainability, leading up to the Illinois Sustainability and Environmental Wellness EXPO on April 9th and then Earth Day on April 22nd. Check out the events page for a listing of the events where Mother Jones Books will be providing relevant literature on the environment. Kicking off the month is an event of the Common Action Free School, a panel discussion of local community green activists. Check out the flyer for the event below, attend a great discussion, then buy a green book from Mother Jones Books!

Two events in March and April

There are two upcoming events in Bloomington-Normal, both very significant, where Mother Jones Books will have its mobile bookstand. The first is Monday, March 7th, at the Illinois Wesleyan campus, where the IWU Peacefellows will screen “Soldiers of Peace” at Hansen Hall. I’ll have a good selection of anti-war literature, as well as progressive literature in other categories.

Also, Mother Jones Books just got approval to be an exhibitor at the 2011 Illinois Sustainable Living and Wellness Expo at Illinois Wesleyan. I will have my environmental/green literature for sale and have ordered even more books on the environment to round out my inventory. You really can’t get this selection of political books here in Bloomington-Normal except from Mother Jones Books. See you there!

Weekend debut

Book events the weekend of February 5-6

Mother Jones Books will have a bookstand this weekend at two different events. The first is today at 3 pm, the Common Action forum “Rebuilding the US Left,” inside the Coffeehouse in Normal, IL. The second is a fundraiser for the local anti-war coalition, the Bloomington-Normal Citizens for Peace and Justice, on Sunday at 4 pm, inside the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Bloomington IL (1613 E. Rebuilding the U.S. Left

Common Action is an awesome student group at ISU that hosts regular educational forums. The next forum, to be held on Feb. 4th, will be led by Andy Thayer, a Chicago-based activist in anti-war and LGBT movements. Mother Jones will have a table in The Coffeehouse offering related literature for sale. Check out the Events section (link above) for all Mother Jones Books events.

Soon to be selling in February!

In just a few short weeks, Mother Jones Books will be selling progressive books in central Illinois! I don’t have a physical space as a bookseller, but will be selling books at political events (such as conferences, conventions, and rallies) and outdoors markets such as flea markets. Check out our Events page for a list of where Mother Jones Books will be selling. Right now I have one place arranged for sure, but there will be numerous events in February.

Introducing Mother Jones Books!

Welcome to the blog for Mother Jones Books! My name is Corey, and I’m starting a progressive bookstore in Bloomington-Normal. As of now, I sell at political events, rallies and protests, flea markets and will be selling online. However, my ultimate goal is to establish a bookstore collective in Bloomington-Normal with a permanent physical presence. I used to volunteer for Mayday Bookstore in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which is the inspiration for starting Mother Jones. As you can see, I’m currently in the process of setting up the business.
